Most of my Disney stuff will be here: http://marinawdwcp.blogspot.com
This is from Nov 4th.
----------------------------------------
Today was my character performer audition!
I met up with Lauren (my visiting CP friend from Louisiana) at her hotel where we proceeded to put on our makeup and sing and dance to the oh so beautiful Zac Efron in Hairspray on tv.
We then walked the sixteen blocks to the audition site at Ballet Austin. When we got there, we only saw a few people in the building, but after all, we were 45 minutes early. After wondering around, we ran into the judge for the CP audition. I recognized her from last semester and it was that point that we were both like 'oh god, this is really about to happen'. Eventually we asked where to wait for the Disney audition and when we found the room, it was filled with 30 or 40 people waiting and mingling. We ran into Marion in the waiting dance hall and sat in her little social circle while we waited for them to call us in to the main audition room.
Once we made it into the room, they explained the whole process and we filled out paperwork. After the paperwork, we lined up, got a number, had our photo taken and had our Disney height measured. In all actuality, I'm 5'1. I was measured at 5'2.5 today so I was measured up. Your Disney height is most likely different than your real height because its based on what height ranges they need.
After that we started learning the steps for the audition. The audition is split into two parts: dance and animation. In animation, they give you two scenarios to act out through body movement without speaking, sort of like charades. The first animation exercise we got was to meet a character in the park. I met Cogsworth, the clock from Beauty and the Beast and it was basically me going in to hug him and then being like wtf? and looking at my watch and then moving the clock hands on him to make him be the right time. Then I gave a thumbs up and hugged him. haha. The second animation exercise we got was to eat food at the parks. I got a hot dog and loaded it with ketchup and mustard using giant bottles, then i went to eat it and the hot dog flew out of the bun and into outer space so I kicked back like shooting a large gun and then jumped to my tippy toes and had my hand over my eyes to watch it soar far far away. Then I was sad. hahah. It might not have made sense watching it but it was fun in my mind grapes.
So... the dance... ugh. It was so hard! Like the steps I would say were moderately difficult. I took a semester of Jazz dance last semester and I felt I was only prepared for half of the steps and not nearly at the quick speed we had to perform it in! It was stuff like pivet turns and grapevines and step-hop-posse sort of things... then the whole thing ended in a quick pirouette and some Power Ranger punches. haha. You learn it 8 counts at a time and you learn it as a whole group (all 75 of us). Each 8 counts is generally more difficult than the last but ours were sort of mixed up. It all depends on what you're used to. The jazz steps I got pretty quickly, but the hip hop sort of steps, I wasn't too quick about. They did do the bent down lifting thing from We're All In This Together, so that was sort of fun. So after you run through the dance and the animations a few times, they send everyone outside and call you in 6 or 7 at a time in the order of your numbers. I was 43 so I had some time to go outside and practice (thank god!). Honestly, I would suggest being towards the end of the audition so you have more time to practice. I get that you want to go first so you can be some of the first people they see, but I'd rather be last and be prepared. Thats just me though.
In your actual audition, you're in there 6 at a time and you perform in front of the judge (there were three this semester, only one last semester) and the choreographer. The choreographer will instruct you on what to do when but the order is this: strike a pose, first animation, second animation, (count 5 6 7 8) dance, first animation again, second animation again, (count 5 6 7 8) dance. Then you're done! For the animations, do the same exact thing both times around. This is in case they weren't watching at a specific time because there are 6 of you in there. And the choreographer will perform the dance with you so you have something to follow in case you get lost.
I saw them keep two girls behind and take additional pictures of them. Idk if that is what being "pulled for face" consists of and therefor the rest of us don't have a shot at face... or maybe they still have decisions to make on that front. Both of them were super dolled up. But then there were other really pretty girls who were way dolled up and you could tell it was too much. Who knows? I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Jasmine but thats IF I pass the audition at all. haha. I would give myself a 7 out of 10 I think. Maybe I did better than that, I'm not sure. I feel like I was as prepared as I could have been with the dance but I think if I would have practiced my animation more in the days before the audition (since they ended up being the same scenarios as last semester), I would have felt better about those. Oh well! Que sera sera.
Oh and they said they're expecting about 1,000 people to audition and they have 200 spots to fill. So, a 1 in 5 shot basically... which isnt too bad!
I'll find out in the coming weeks what will be the final verdict, but either way.. I'm moving to Disney World!! 60 days until check in! Woohoo!!

53 days now! Woohoo!

Also, I received word back from two of the professors and its a go for both of the criminal justice online courses so I'll at least be taking one. I want to take archaeology but that course is offered at my campus so I may wait to take it in a classroom. I'm still trying to decide. I'm going to speak to the archaeology professor on Monday because it just so happens that she's Charlie's physical anthropology professor too! Small world.

I'm also planning on following a bit of a CP trend and making a youtube video that showcases some of Austin for my Disney friends. I'm still trying to think in my mind grapes on where to go. Thoughts?
I'm thinking Bull Creek, South Congress, Congress Bridge bats, Arboretum cows, the drag, zilker park/botanical gardens, maybe 360 lookout?
I went to speak with my advisor last week after I was accepted into the CP to see if I could get credit for going to the classes at Disney. The classes are suggested for credit by the American Council of Education (I think thats what its called) but its up to your school whether the syllabus will match up with a similar class at your university. ACC doesn't give credit, of course. [blerg!]
So now I'm looking into taking Distance Learning classes (online classes) through ACC while I'm in Florida. I'm running into a couple of issues though. (you'll notice that I like to make lists, haha).
1) I have to be able to either take tests online or take them at Valencia Community College (in Orlando) and have their testing center coordinate with ACC and mail my scores back to Austin.
2) The course needs to have an online orientation as opposed to an in class orientation because school starts two weeks after I move to Florida.
3) The class has to be interesting and not something that would be better taken in a classroom for interestingness. This really only applies to my campus. Most Distance Learning classes are offered at ACC, but at the campuses on the other side of town.
4)They have to be good teachers that leave a large enough window for tests and quizzes in case I'm working on a specific day/night.
So therefore, here is my list I want to choose from. I just need two classes so hopefully something will work out.
- ANTH 2302 [Anthropology]- Introduction to Archaeology. This course covers archaeological techniques for reconstructing ancient societies. Emphasis is placed on archaeological questions, scientific methods, and culture change.
- CJCR 2314 [Criminal Justice]- Criminal Investigation. Investigative theory; collection and preservation of evidence; sources of information; interview and interrogation; uses of forensic sciences; case and trial preparation.
- CRIJ 1307 [Criminal Justice] - Crime in America. American crime problems in historical perspective; social and public policy factors affecting crime; impact and crime trends; social characteristics of specific crimes; prevention of crime.
- SOCI 2326 [Sociology] - Social Psychology. A survey of the basic theories and research methods in social psychology; the interaction between the individual and society; the process of acquiring a self concept; socialization processes; personal and social adjustment; interaction within the group.
- SOCI 2336 [Sociology] - Criminology. Current theories and empirical research pertaining to crime and criminal behavior. Its causes, methods of prevention, systems of punishment and rehabilitation.
I really want to get super good at quick portraits so I can make myself stand out against the other Photopassers. Even though I'll be coming back to Texas after my CP, there's surely no harm in being the best I can while I'm there.
Other goals I have for the CP:
- Learn to cook well!
- Become a better, more well rounded photographer
- Keep a journal (a real one) with pictures and little keepsakes
- Swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Maybe even learn to surf! Also, practice making sand castles
- Work on learning a new language
- Make as many new friends as possible
- Get into really good shape (starting now)
- Try new things all the time! (Indoor skydiving anyone?)
- Figure out what I need to do to sing in a Walt Disney World show
- Make magic every day!!
Presenting: THE PURPLE EMAIL!!!!

I'm moving to Florida from January to May!!!!!
Man, I have waited an entire year for this moment. It is an absolutely amazing feeling. Its like an entire universe lifting off of my shoulders!
So so so so SO happy!!!!
I only had my interview on Sept 3rd and I got it today Sept 11th!!
More details to come, of course!
I'm going to wait a few weeks and let my body absorb the ink and all that and I'll post a picture when its healed.
No word yet from Disney.
[Btw, I forgot to mention that I dropped that Biology course because it was too difficult (ah doi) and thats why I applied for more roles than just character performer like I said I was going to do earlier. ]
Anyway, I had my interview last night and it went so well!
My interviewer's name was Margie, which is also my mom's name so our interview started out talking about how great of a name that is! haha. Then she explained the interview process and away we went. We went over my application, if I had applied for Disney before, verified that I am a college student, etc. Then she asked me about my job and what I do there and if I had roommates. Then my favorite question: How open am I to people from diverse backgrounds? Ha! I talked about how my passion is travel and especially travel writing (mostly because I'm too poor to travel often, haha) and how I love learning about different cultures and meeting people from different places. Then I told her about how we're planning on going to Japan for a summer in the next two years and how if I could travel every day of my life I would. She laughed and was like "Oh man, me too!". She didn't ask me very many role specific ones.
For character performer: She was basically like, you've done the audition before and you know how difficult it is, how are your dance skillz? And I told her that I've taken Jazz Dance and Middle Eastern dance but that I dance all the time, especially to High School Musical. haha. That was the only question so idk if she just thought I was confortable enough with that sort of role or what. Immediately after that question she signed me up for the Austin audition thats on November 4th!
Note: This semester they're changing the system for character performer hopefuls and I like it sooo much better than how it was before! Before this semester, each of the 14 auditions were held over a period of about a month and a half, meaning everyone on the western side of the US were auditioning a month after those on the east coast and there were less spots open. This is the whole reason we went to Rochester, NY to audition. Also, if you applied for character performer, they held your file until after your audition. If you didn't pass the audition, chances were there wouldn't be many spots open in your back up roles, if at all, so you wouldn't get in to the program. (ie: me, last semester). THIS semester, all of the auditions are the same week across the country. Also, before your audition, Disney will send you an offer and it'll say like "Congratulations! You've been extended an offer in Attractions for the Spring 2010 program!" and you can accept that role. You still audition, and if you pass the audition you can switch Attractions for Character Perfomer. If you don't pass the audition, you already have a spot saved for you in Attractions! And if the offer letter before your audition comes as a rejection letter, you can still audition and hope to make it in as a Character Performer. The rejection letter at that point just means you weren't right for your back up roles. I love these new rules!
Okay, on we go. For Character Attendant: She asked what I would do if someone was being rough with a character. I basically said that if it was a child I would try to distract them by asking what their favorite ride was so far or something. If It was an adult, I would politely explain that mice are small and gentle creatures and that you should be nice to them! haha. I don't know how that answer was but thats all I could think of.
Photopass Photographer: She first asked about my experience with photography and I said that I take a TON of pictures all the time and when we went to Disney a few years ago I took 1700 pictures in a week. Then I went on to say that I think they use DSLR's at the parks and I said I used Meagan's while we were in New York. Then she said that most people who apply for that role have some sort of professional experience like working for a school newspaper or something. So I told her that I'm the official photographer for work events and outtings and that I also manage our online gallery at work. That seemed to be a sufficient answer because then she was like "Photopass has two different sides to it: Taking photos around the parks and working the photopass kiosks selling prints and merchandise (mugs, etc). What would I do to upsell photopass products?". I basicallly said that photopass pictures will be of much higher quality than guests' point and shoot cameras and that with photopass pictures, the whole family gets to be in the picture instead of everyone minus the one who is taking the picture. I also mentioned something about kids only being that old for so long and that you'll want high quality representation of those memories.
I also applied for attractions but she didn't ask me a single question about attractions so hopefully that means I'll get character attendant or photopass!! I'm kind of on the fence about what I think I'll get. She asked me more questions about photopass but more than once during the interview she said "well it sounds like you know what you're talking about so let's skip this part and move on", so maybe she sensed that I would be qualified as a character attendant? I'm not sure.
So far, people have been hearing within two weeks about their initial offer! I hope mine comes that soon! Keep your fingers crossed!
At least I'm sure it was a simple error because everyone who gets past the web interview gets a phone interview.
Now I'll have to wait until Monday to reschedule my interview, but thats alright. It'll give me more time to prepare!
Yesterday was my first day of the semester. I think I got some pretty good teachers this time around, which I'm very excited about. I think I'm going to have a ton of outside work, which I'm not really used to. I'm one of those people that does current events in the 15 minutes in between classes and never opens her textbook outside of classroom doors. haha.
That will definitely have to change this semester.
I'm taking United States Government, Interpersonal Communications, and Cellular/Molecular Biology.
The biology course is designed for science majors only, which I'm not as of yet, but as the prereq to genetics, I have to get through this class and it should give me a pretty solid idea of the coursework. The problem is, we don't cover genetics until the last month so I can't really 'try it out' like I was planning. I took the leap though by taking this course instead of the introduction to biology courses, mainly because only one will count towards graduation. I didn't want to take Intro to Bio, then decide I do want to do genetics, then have to take C/M Bio anyway and not get credit for all that hard work I got myself in to.
I'll find out more tomorrow but it sounds like I'll have lecture notes, lecture tests, pre lab quizzes online before my lab class, then the lab itself where I have to keep a lab notebook (and where chemistry class comes rushing back to me, including but not limited to: writing background of experiment, materials, step by step instruction, analysis including graphs [and code apparently], conclusion), post lab quizzes online after lab class, then of course, reading my textbook thats 3 inches thick.
I asked for it though. And I'm gonna try my best.

In other news, the applications for the Disney College Program went up last week and I'm applying again. Since I have some classes that are best taken one right after the other (ie: above), it would be better for me to go in the fall semester but I figured I'd give it a shot this spring on a more limited side. I'm only applying for character performer this time around and not putting any back up roles. If I pass the audition in a few months, that means I made it in. If I don't pass the audition, thats it and I wait until next season like I planned. I don't entirely expect to make it in, to be honest. Disney is the number one entertainment company for a reason, they only pick the best, and while I think I'm good at what I do, acting and dancing are not my strong point, especially compared to singing (which singing roles are not offered for this program unfortunately). I'm going to try my hardest and plan ahead and hope I get the same animation scenarios as last time because I think thats what threw me off. I had a plan but when I got there, I was overwhelmed and did something completely different that sucked, haha. This time, I know what to expect, its less pressure, and hopefully I'll actually have fun like I'm supposed to.
I made it through the brand new 'web interview' process, which I was terrified of for no good reason. Its set up in the form of "I am always on time" and you choose from strongly disagree to strongly agree. They definitely throw in some questions, not necessarily to trick you, but to make sure youre paying attention I guess. And they repeat questions by changing a few words around to make sure you're consistent in your answers. With this new system, if you answer too many questions poorly, you're immediately rejected from the program without ever speaking personally with a Disney recruiter. I guess its good that theyre screening people, its just another stressful step in the stressful process though. Anyway, I'm scheduling my phone interview today. I hope things work out this time around.
Midtown:

( aaaaand GO! )
I'll post the other sections another day. :)
So, in the meantime, for my 21st birthday this December....
I'm going back to Disney World!!!
Yessss finally. haha. The game plan is to convince Charlie's brother Chris to go because then it would be myself, my sister, Charlie, and his brother! Siblings and future Siblings In Law!
That way, when Charlie wants to ride Tower of Terror, he can take Chris. And when I want to wait 45 minutes to meet Belle, I can take my sister Lauren. haha. Its the perfect plan... It's just pretty expensive so convincing Chris to spend so much money on Disney World will be tough but I've been showing him menus of restaurants and videos of rides and for once, he seems quasi-interested in what I say. Usually when I start sentences with "At Disney..." people automatically tune me out. haha. Which I don't blame them, it happens a lot.
PLUS! The Christmas decorations will be up all over the parks and resorts! Ahh, I can't wait!
Here's whats going on:
School registration. What a pain! PS why didn't anyone tell me that classes have been open for three weeks? I pretty much have two schedule options that are both ridiculous. The only Japanese I class left is on Mondays and Wednesday from 7:30-10:00 PM!!! But, I want to get in two semesters before we go to Japan so I'll suck it up and at least give it a shot. Secondly, the Intro to Biology classes won't fit within my schedule so I'm taking Cellular and Molecular Biology, which is harder but also more genetics specific so hopefully I'll like the material enough to not hate the class (all four hours of it).
My dad got re-married last week to his awesome girlfriend Kandy. Now I have two step-brothers, Chad and Kolby, and a step-sister Kayla. With myself and Lauren, that makes 5 kids. Yay big families!
This is such a goober picture.

Monday we had our first Am-Fi showcase since December and it went amazingly well. Mary Ann and the Shaky Hands played, including our newest member, the pedal steel playing Evan (making 7 people in our band). Also performing were Federal!State!Local!, Electric Toy Danger, and Burywood sporting a brand new full band (as opposed to just Philip). Everyone did so well and it was so much fun to be there with all of our friends again and just chill and play music and be merry. This showcase was the beginning of a full-on revival of Am-Fi and everything that it stood for in the very beginning. Let's hope we can take it with us somewhere nice.
So here are the credits I have. Can you tell how I tend to change my major a lot?:
US History I, US History II, Texas Government, Cultural Anthropology, Psychology, Spanish I, English Composition I, Songwriting, Musical Fundamentals, Voice I, Jazz Dance, Middle Eastern Dance, Intermediate Algebra, Natural Hazards and Disasters. I have 37 credits.
Classes I still need to take:
College Alebra, US Government, English Composition II, Speech (Interpersonal Communications or Public Speaking), a science with a lab (most likely Astronomy) and I need another semester of Spanish or two semesters of a new language just to be safe. I may have to take economics too, I'm not sure.
Extra classes I want to take:
Japanese I, American Sign Language (I'd need to take a placement test), Genetics (if I do Biology as my lab science), Human Anatomy (also after Biology), Cultural Geography, Archaeology, Piano I, Musical Theatre, Modern Dance, Social Dance (ballroom), Creative Writing: Creative Nonfiction, Theatre: Voice and Diction, Film Appreciation, Music Appreciation, Intro to Comparative Religions, History of Eastern Religions.
I still can't decide on what to major in or where to transfer to, so I'll just keep trying out different things until something strikes the right chord I guess. Maybe science will be the key. I've always wanted to be an aerospace engineer or a geneticist. But I've also always wanted to be an archaeologist. or a world traveler. or a journalist. or a broadway performer. or Princess Jasmine.
Lets hope theres a lead sometime soon.
2. School's over!
- Musical Fundamentals - A for sure.
- Texas Government - Most likely an A
- Jazz Dance - Most likely an A but absences might make it a B
- Middle Eastern Dance - A
4. I'm not going to audition in March for the fall program at Disney. I'll still audition in September here in Austin and not apply for any other roles. If I don't pass the audition, I'll just apply in January for fall like I planned. If you don't do a character audition, you can apply and possibly get accepted in January, February or early March. If you audition, you have to wait to be accepted/denied until after your audition, meaning during those three or four months before your audition, your secondary choices are being filled, leaving less space for you. I'm not willing to risk it at that point. I would have already waited two years and I don't want to wait any longer than that. So no New York trip.
5. I want to go camping on the beach this summer. I've only been camping once and it was in November and I was sick (see posts on Renaissance Festival). I know you get sand everywhere but I don't care. I've been watching the Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello Beach Party movies and I want to do that so bad. haha. Also, instead of doing the frug, we're gonna learn the HSM dances and do them on the beach. Possibly Thriller too.
6. I want to expand my summer/vintage dress collection. I've been meaning to for a couple of years now but I never have any extra money. Hopefully I will soon. I love dresses.
7. Its finally summer. I spent like an hour after school on the last day singing 'What Time Is It?' and doing the dance... and it was awesome. Yay summer!
Summer:
Work, a lot. Save as much money as I can.
Go on a Texas tour with Mary Ann and the Shaky Hands.
Start getting my tattoo removed (approx $500)
Fall:
Pick a major, pick a university to transfer to.
Move to Central or South Central Austin, into a house.
Switch ACC campuses.
Take hip hop dance classes.
Possibly get another dog? haha
Audition for WDWCP Spring Program in Austin.
Maybe work at Six Flags.
Turn 21.
Spring:
If I pass the audition, Disney World.
If not: I don't know. School. Saving money.
Apply for WDWCP Fall 2010.
Audition/New York City. Possibly my first solo trip.
Summer:
Work work work.
JAPAN!!!!!!!
Climbing this:
Fall:
Disney World!
Anyway, I just got a call from the entertainment department at Six Flags saying I passed the character audition if I wanted to work as a Looney Toons character but that they didn't have anything open for the show I wanted until after the summer (which the judge I had talked to on the phone had vaguely mentioned before by saying 'we dont have anything right now'). I respectfully declined because as it turns out I live exactly 100 miles away from Six Flags and I just can't drive that much every week to get paid eight dollars an hour. In any event, being a character there wouldn't really help me with Disney anyway, because I still have to pass their audition. It would only make me feel a bit more comfortable AFTER I was accepted as Character Performer. If only they paid a bit more, it would be so worth the drive, but I honestly have a hard time living on what I make now, working one mile away from where I live haha. I can't imagine getting a paycut, plus putting all those miles on my poor thunderbird.
The experience was definitely fun though! I'm still waiting for the day that Disney opens that park in Central Texas... maybe someday.

I've got my graduation bear, my future Belle tattoo, Charlie and I at Disney World with Mickey, Charlie and I at prom and my Elvis Presley doll. Soon I'll be replacing that ugly coffee mug with my new HSM one that I got as a gift. haha.

There's my giant window!

My lovely view.

My calendar corner haha.
One of these will be my Fuji-san tattoo after we get back from Japan but I haven't really decided on which one yet.

So that's my new home at work!
I really want to try to find something incredible to do in the meantime, before applying again, so I don't feel such an insane void every day when I wake up in Austin instead of Orlando. Its like yeah, i'll try again and its not a big deal, but I've been basically planning the next year in accordance with not being here and now I'll be here, which is great, but I can't figure out what to do with myself.
I even looked at the websites for Six Flags, Schlitterbahn and Sea World, trying to find some job that'll make me feel a bit closer. Six Flags even has a show that is pretty much a rip off of HSM, but theyre not hiring. Maybe in the fall... who knows.
The good news is, I'll have lots of time to work with Mary Ann and the Shaky Hands and run around the state on a tour. That's going to be such a blasttt.
I only had three roles out of about 20 and with the recession I guess my chances weren't that great to begin with.
I was really leaning towards waiting anyway so I guess this is a good thing. I made a pro and con list for waiting and I had ten pros and only two cons, so really I might have made the same decision, I just wish it was MY decision, you know?
I'm going to audition again for the spring semester in September, but audition here in Austin and only go in the spring if I make character. That way, I'll at least have another audition to work off of. For Fall 2010, I'm going to put a lot more roles down. Like a ton. And I'll have my tattoo removed so I'll be re-eligible for the roles I wanted in the first place.
What a bummer man, but here's to moving forward.
New York City was absolutely incredible. The entire time we were there, everything was so surreal. I only wish we would have had more time there.
( recap )
